Tripod

A tripod will provide a stable platform that eliminates camera shake
as a result of handholding the camera.

At slow shutter speeds, camera shake can cause an image to appear blurry and out of focus. Photographs taken on a tripod typically blow up to a larger size with little loss of sharpness.

A tripod is probably the best piece of equipment that will immediately improve your photography.

A high quality tripod will certainly outlast the lifespan of your digital camera and will greatly assist in taking sharp photographs that can be used with all future cameras.

Tripods are very useful in the following situations:

  • Self Portrait
  • Photographing landscapes
  • Close-ups
  • Using zoom, tele-converters or telephoto lenses
  • Low light situation that require slow shutter speeds (night shots)

A tripod is vital for sharp pictures when focusing at close distances and at a high magnifications. You also need a tripod as soon as you attach a lens longer than 300mm. Long lenses magnify camera shake and the only way to solve the problem is to use a tripod or monopod.

If you are shooting in low light or at night a tripod is essential to hold the camera still for a matter of seconds, minutes or hours.

What sort of tripod should you buy?

A tripod needs to be sturdy enough to support the weight of your digital camera and lens. Too light a tripod and the camera can be left gently swaying in even a slight breeze or can over-balance.

There is a wide range of “medium” tripods at reasonable prices which will
do a good job, so any tripod is better than no tripod!

The larger, heavy duty tripods are designed to hold medium and large format digital cameras. If you want to get your digital camera up high above your subject (two meter or more), the larger heavier tripods are the only way to go.

But most tripod photographs are taken at eye level or lower. If you don’t need the height you can buy a much lighter tripod that’s still sturdy enough for your digital camera.

Don’t only look for a tripod’s maximum height because if you are interested in macro photography, you will often want to position your digital camera just a few inches above the garden bed. Not all tripod designs let you do this.

Some tripod’s will spread their legs without restriction, allowing the camera to be lowered to the height of the tripod head.

What to consider when shopping for a tripod

There are two main things to consider when shopping for a tripod:

  • The weight of your camera
  • Your photographic needs

Generally, the heavier the tripod, the steadiest it is. Small compact digital cameras can be used on a lighter tripods. There are numerous models of small and lightweight tripods especially designed for compact and medium size digital cameras.

You don’t need to be a professional to use a tripod. If you want to take a
great picture at night, a tripod is a must, otherwise chance to have a blurry picture are very good.

On most digital cameras, a night scene mode is available to take picture of an evening sky, any night scene or to capture human subjects.

While taking the picture, the people are illuminated with light from the flash while the backdrop is captured at a slow shutter speed so that both appear correctly exposed.

While using the slow shutter speed mode, any vibration such as motion when holding the camera or even the wind will have a negative effect on your picture. Using a tripod will highly increase the quality of your pictures.

Tripods are available in different sizes. They can be very compact and also very light.
