Sony DSC-T5 Review

Sony DSC-T5 Review

Sony has considerably reworked its DSC-T7 digital camera model into a
small package. The Sony DSC-T5 is only 13/16" (20.3 mm) thin and weighs just 3.98 oz (139 grams) with a stylish metal chrome finish available in black, red and silver.

Sony DSC-T5

Equipped with an impressive 2.5 inch LCD screen, 5 megapixel, 32 MB of internal memory and a powerful lithium ion battery. When the battery is fully charged, you will be able to shot 240 shots which is quite impressive. You won’t find a better battery on the market for that type of digital camera.

I like the way the T5 starts up, simply slide the wide lens panel down and you are ready to take pictures. But you have to be careful if you carry the camera in your pocket as the door may occasionally open accidentally and then use precious battery time.

The safety latch should be a little firmer.

The top surface carries power, shutter button and mode switch (replay, still and movie record). It will be easy to find yourself shooting movies instead of stills, I would have prefer to have the still and movie shoot and still position separated by the replay button.

The Sony DSC-T5 is one of the few compact digital cameras with no docking cradle. Instead, Sony designed a clever three way access point in the camera’s base, and to this is attached one cable that connects to the computer USB port, a television or VCR.

Start-up

The Sony Cybershot T5 is a rapid shooter, able to catch the first shot within two seconds of power start-up, subsequent shots can be taken at speeds of less than one second which is very good.

Sony DSC-T5 Review - Pros

  • Ultra-slim, will fit in your shirt pocket
  • Excellent shutter response and good start-up
  • Great 2.5 inch LCD screen that can be utilise under bright light or under the sun
  • Good movie mode for a compact digital camera
  • Very good photo quality

Sony DSC-T5 Review - Cons

  • Weak flash (very common with subcompact digital cameras)
  • No optical viewfinder
  • Poorly-placed microphone
  • Expensive memory card format

Sony DSC-T5 Review – Battery and memory

Battery
As discussed earlier, the Sony T5 is equipped with a long lasting lithium battery.

The only problem with these batteries is they are expensive, about $50 each and you can’t use regular batteries in case of emergency. So you might want to consider purchasing a second battery as a back up.

Expensive batteries also have their advantages, you get to take lots of shots but the battery used by the T5 tells you exactly how many minutes you have left before you need to replace the battery.

Memory
Like the other T-series digital cameras, the T5 uses Memory Stick Duo cards, which are available as large as 2GB. These cards are smaller than regular Memory Sticks, and an adapter is included so you can use them in things with regular MS slots.

The downside with MS Duo cards is that they're expensive -- a 1GB card will set you back $105, while an equivalent SD card costs about $88.

You can consult my memory guide for more information on memory card/stick for digital cameras.

Sony DSC-T5 Review – Final Word

If you are after a tiny digital camera that will fit in your pocket you should consider the Sony DSC-T5. You get an impressive 5 megapixel, great battery life and you will take quality picture.

The video mode is quite impressive for such a compact digital camera. You will also appreciate the large 2.5 LCD screen to review your shots and movie as you go.

The Sony T5 is ideal for someone who wants a stylish easy to use compact camera without compromising on quality and it’s a Sony!
