Digital Cameras FAQ

In this section, I will try to answer the most popular digital cameras FAQ.
My website have been online since 2004 and since then I have received lots of emails asking different questions regarding technical terms, what digital camera to select etc.

Please feel free to contact me if you need additional information.

OK let's start...

Digital Cameras FAQ - Are digital cameras under $300 worth the money?

Four or five years ago I would have answer no. But in today's market my answer is yes.

The competition between digital cameras manufacturers is so fierce, technology is improving every day which make the prices going down.

So yes it now possible to get a very decent digital camera under $300.

In fact, if you are on a really tight budget, you can get good digital camera for $200 and still getting an excellent product.

Digital Cameras FAQ - Sometimes I can find digital cameras $200 - $300 cheaper online, how is it possible?

My answer to this is simple: If it's too good to be true, then it probably is.

I am big fan of online shopping and yes it is usually cheaper online. You can expect savings anywhere from $10 to $100.

Shopping online is the same concept as of shopping offline, always make sure you are buying from reputable store and most of the time everything will be fine.

Stay away from any deals of the century!!

Digital Cameras FAQ - What is the difference between optical and digital zoom?

Here a brief definition of both terms: Optical zoom is similar to what you
will find in a regular 35mm camera, when you push the button to zoom in or out, you closer or further away of the subject.

The higher the optical zoom, the better the resolution.

Digital zoom simply enlarges or blows up the image and crops in on the part you see on the LCD. This enlargement process will reduce the resolution or quality of the image.

When selecting a digital camera, always make sure you know what optical zoom you are getting with your camera.

Often you see digital cameras advertised with 20X or 35X zoom but they don't specified if it is optical or digital zoom.

Most digital cameras have a 3X optical zoom, you can find some models with a 10X optical zoom but they are more expensive.

But technology is improving so fast that 10X optical zoom will soon almost be standard on every digital camera.

Digital Cameras FAQ - How can I tell if a digital camera allow playback through a television?

Go to the digital camera manufacturer's website and find for the specification of the model you are interested in.

Then look for Video Out under interface.

Please note that it's not all digital cameras who are allowing playback through your television.

Digital Cameras FAQ - When I buy a digital camera, what should be my main criteria?

Please visit my Digital Camera Buyer's Guide page.

Digital Cameras FAQ - What size of memory card should I buy?

The more megapixel your digital camera has the more memory you will need.

For most people, 3 - 5 megapixel is enough, but because technology is improving everyday, prices are also going down.

Now you can buy a 10 megapixel digital camera at a reasonable price. But this also means you will need a bigger memory card.

See my memory cards section for complete information on memory for digital cameras.
