Canon S70 Review

Canon S70 Review

If you are after a wideangle lenses digital camera you need to consider the
Canon S70 in your selection. This 7 megapixel Canon digital camera is not an ultra compact camera but has a wide and thick-is flat body.

The S range of Canon Powershots will not attract the “serious” photographers like the G range but they have been getting better and better.

One advantage of wideangle lenses digital camera is that you can always crop in on shots to get a greater telephoto look. Wideangle lenses make you more creative when taking shots.

Concerning the shape of the Canon S70 some people love it and other people just don’t like it. The camera's body is half as long as one of Canon's digital Elphs models measuring 4.5 inches across. The S70 is short enough to feel compact and fit in most pants pockets but also long enough to make two-handed shooting a comfortable experience.

Canon S70 Review - Pros

  • True wideangle lens
  • 7 megapixel
  • Image quality
  • Lots of manual controls

Canon S70 Review - Cons

  • Battery life not great
  • Shape can be a turn-off

Canon S70 Review – Final Word

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced digital photographer the Canon S70 is a very good choice. For the beginner, plenty of automation and programmed functions to start using your cameras and get great results right from the beginning. For the more experienced photographer the Canon S70 offers a plenty of controls including RAW format to extend your capabilities.

The Canon S70 would be a great digital camera for someone in the real estate business that needs to take interior shots.

Canon S70 Review – Memory

Most digital cameras come with very low capacity memory cards and the Canon S70 is no exception. A 32 MB CompactFlash memory card is included in the box when you purchase the S70.

There is no fixed rule for the number of photos you can put on one card because different image file types, different amounts of compression, and image content all affect the size of each file.

As a general rule, I'd recommend at least a 256 megabytes or two 128 megabyte cards if you're buying a 3-5 megapixel compact digital camera. For a 7 megapixel digital camera like the S70 I strongly recommend to buy a 512 MB memory card.

If you want to shoot lots of high resolution TIFF or RAW files, then you'll probably want to look at 512 megabyte and 1 gigabyte cards. It's also a good idea to not save all of your photos on one card.

Click here for more information on memory cards.

With the 32 MB memory card included with the Canon S70, you will take approximately 8 pictures before having to empty the memory card! You need to budget for another memory card.

Another good reason to get several memory cards is there's always the possibility that cards can get corrupted, lost, or stolen. Using more than one and switching during a shoot protects your valuable photographic data.

The type of memory card for the Canon S70 is CompactFlash.
