Canon Powershot S1 IS

Review

Canon PowerShot S1 IS Review

The Canon Powershot S1 IS is a surprisingly
small digital camera with a busy exterior. I like the way that there is a button for almost every function on almost every surface of the camera. Some people might find it to “busy”.

The 18 controls are evenly spaced and big enough not to be fiddly. The IS (meaning Image Stabilisation) is shake reduction but not always elimination.

The movie mode is great not only because of the high quality movies, but also because you can zoom while taking the movie. Most cameras will not let you zoom and you have to leave it where it is.

And with the ultrasonic motor zoom, you won’t hear it in the movie that you are filming.

Canon recommends high speed CompactFlash memory card to achieve the highest quality video.

I wish the Canon PowerShot S1 IS was using the same battery as the Canon G6 or G3 because if you are using the video feature, you will need to carry with you at least a spare set of batteries.

Canon Powershot S1 IS Review - Pros

  • 10X Optical Zoom
  • Full of practical features
  • Very quiet zoom
  • Quality video feature
  • Image stabilizer is ideal for the 10X zoom

Canon Powershot S1 IS Review - Cons

  • Only 3 megapixel
  • Can be tricky to find comfortable grip for your left hand when holding the camera
  • No LCD automatic brightness control

Canon Powershot S1 IS Review – Final Word

If you can live without super high resolution, the PowerShot S1 IS is a digital camera up to the Canon standards. You will enjoy the powerful and quiet 10x optical zoom and great quality images.

You can see below how great and powerful is the 10x optical zoom.

Very good movie capture (up to 1 hour depending of your memory card), manual exposure control, solid image quality and many other features that makes the Canon S1 IS a very attractive digital camera.

On the negative side, it is an expensive digital camera for a 3 megapixel and a better battery would have been great

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Canon Powershot S1 IS Review – Memory

Most digital cameras come with very low capacity memory cards and the Canon S1 IS is no exception. A 32 MB CompactFlash memory card is included in the box when you purchase the S1 IS.

There is no fixed rule for the number of photos you can put on one card because different image file types, different amounts of compression, and image content all affect the size of each file.

As a general rule, I'd recommend at least 256 megabytes or two 128 megabyte cards if you're buying a 3-5 megapixel compact digital camera.

If you want to shoot lots of high resolution TIFF or RAW files, then you'll probably want to look at 512 megabyte and 1 gigabyte cards. It's also a good idea to not save all of your photos on one card.

Click here for more information on memory cards.

With the 32 MB memory card included with the Canon S1 IS, you will take approximately 25 pictures before having to empty the memory card! You need to budget for another memory card.

Another good reason to get several memory cards is there's always the possibility that cards can get corrupted, lost, or stolen. Using more than one and switching during a shoot protects your valuable photographic data.

The type of memory card for the Canon S1 IS is Compact Flash Memory Card (CF) Card Type I or Type II.
