Canon G6 Review

Canon G6 Review

The Canon G6 looks and feels like a traditional camera, bulky but comfortable to use. If you are looking to take your hobby to the next level or an alternative to SLR camera, you should go for the G6.

I am surprised that Canon's Print/Share blue button is missing, I found that feature very handy to quickly print pictures with my printer. Although the G6's support for the PictBridge standard that lets you print directly to a compatible printer.

The G6 uses an upgraded rechargeable lithium ion battery. It's the same size as the one in the G5, but Canon says it will last 26 percent longer, another great feature of the G6.

Canon G6 Review - Pros

  • Images are impressively sharp
  • Wide range of manual features
  • Flip and twist 2 in LCD screen
  • Excellent battery life for a camera of this size
  • As close as it get to SLR camera quality and features without the price tag

Canon G6 Review - Cons

  • Power locking is not great, the cameras sometimes turn itself on when taken out of the bag, very annoying
  • LCD screen switched off when using high speed mode
  • Movie mode limited to 30 secs, 10 frames/sec at highest resolution

Canon G6 Review – Final Word

I still own my “old” PowerShot G3 because I just love the features and the feel of the camera. Canon didn’t really improve the G3 with the PowerShot G5 but with the G6 they are spot on!

One major improvement is that you no longer see the zoom barrel through the viewfinder (which is the case with the G3 & G5).

Always read customer reviews on different digital camera website before buying and you won’t find many negatives review on the G6 which is very good indication of the quality of the camera.

I wish the Canon G6 had the 10x optical zoom of the Powershot S1 IS, but regardless of the zoom at around $550.00 you won’t be disappointed if you want to take your hobby to the next level without spending the money for a SLR camera.

Canon G6 Review – Memory

Most digital cameras come with very low capacity memory cards and the Canon G6 is no exception. A 32 MB CompactFlash memory card is included in the box when you purchase the G6.

There is no fixed rule for the number of photos you can put on one card because different image file types, different amounts of compression, and image content all affect the size of each file.

As a general rule, I'd recommend at least 256 megabytes or two 128 megabyte cards if you're buying a 3-5 megapixel compact digital camera.

If you want to shoot lots of high resolution TIFF or RAW files, then you'll probably want to look at 512 megabyte and 1 gigabyte cards. It's also a good idea to not save all of your photos on one card.

Click here for more information on memory cards.

With the 32 MB memory card included with the Canon G6, you will take approximately 25 pictures before having to empty the memory card! You need to budget for another memory card.

Another good reason to get several memory cards is there's always the possibility that cards can get corrupted, lost, or stolen. Using more than one and switching during a shoot protects your valuable photographic data.

The type of memory card for the Canon G6 is CompactFlash (CF) Card Type I or Type II.
